What’s In Your Bag: Aspyn Ovard

In August 2000, Aspyn Ovard started a lifestyle YouTube channel which currently has more than 3 million followers. We caught up with Aspyn and her family at Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego to learn more about her tips and tricks for travel. Her passion for exploring new places combined with her frequent flyer status make Aspyn the ultimate packing professional.

What are your favorite travel destinations for kids?

Anywhere relaxing and beachy! California is always easy for us since it’s a short flight.

What are your top tips for travel with children?

Normally I like to only take a carry on and pack super light, but as Cove gets older and needs more things brought for her, I think we will check bags so that it’s less stressful getting through the airport! I also love my carseat/stroller combo because it’s super easy and convenient, or i’ve worn Cove in a wrap through the airport to be hands free!

Roll, cube or fold?

I love using packing cubes but usually for shorter trips I will roll!

What are your top five travel essentials?

I always have to bring chapstick! Headphones of course, a neck pillow for long flights, a camera to take photos and videos, and I love our carseat/stroller combo from Doona because it’s so convenient.

What’s in your carry-on?

Everything haha! I always pack a carry on only. I like to pack light and minimally.

Do you use a mental, physical or digital packing list?

Usually physical if it was for a longer trip, but just a mental one for a short trip!

Airplane food, yah or nay?

Nay!!! I almost never eat the airplane meal unless I am on a flight over 6 hours.

Do you have any travel rituals?

We always touch the outside of the plane before we get on!

How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle while travelling?

I like to look for healthy restaurants in the area and walk as much as possible in cities like New York.

Do you have any tricks for dealing with jetlag and children?

I don’t have any yet since we haven’t taken Cove anywhere too far yet, but I think our main plan will be to stay flexible and don’t plan any major activities for the first or second day of the trip to give everyone time to adjust.

Favorite travel souvenir?

We bring home a postcard from every country we visit. Small and easy to store!!

Why do you love to travel?

I love to get out and see different parts of the world!
