5 Things to Bring on your Sea-to-Sky Road Trip
They say the journey is just as important as the destination – which rings true when talking about a trip up the Sea-to-Sky highway. This 120km stretch from Vancouver to Whistler is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful road trips, with views of epic mountains, sparkling sea, and endless sky. Get a few friends together, warm up the car, and be sure to bring along these 5 must-haves for your sea-to-sky road trip.
Raincoat
They weren’t kidding when they said it rains a lot in the Pacific Northwest. Luckily, the rain is what maintains the lush forests and greenery. Depending on the time of the year, you may not see any rain, but it is always better to be prepared. Ensure your jacket is 100% waterproof so that you stay dry for the remainder of your trip. Do like the locals do and bring along your Herschel rain jacket, a Canadian company based in Vancouver.
Camera
You’ll likely want to pull a camera out when you see the astounding views at one of the several lookout points. Bring your camera with an empty memory card and freshly charged battery, or ensure that you have enough space on your phone for a bunch of new photos. Looking to up your phone photography game? Consider bringing along an Olloclip – an attachable external lens that clips on to your phone – to get even more of the stunning scene in your shot.
Layer, layers, layers
In this region of British Columbia, the weather can vary greatly depending on the time of the year, or even the hour. With the variety of weather, your best bet to staying prepared is to dress in layers. Allowing yourself the option of bundling up if the temperatures take a dip, or taking off the bulky sweaters if the sun comes out, will let you focus on the views instead of the weather.
Hiking shoes
Since the trip from Vancouver to Whistler takes around an hour and a half, there is still plenty time in your day for a short hike. From beginner to expert trails, there is sure to be a hike for everyone. With that in mind, be sure to bring waterproof hiking shoes in case you make a stop. We recommend taking a short trip to Shannon Falls – easily accessible off of the highway – to witness British Columbia’s third tallest waterfall at 335 metres. The stop should only take around 30 minutes and is another great photo opportunity.
Reusable water bottle
After your hike, and on your road trip journey, it is important to keep hydrated. Benefit yourself and the environment by utilizing a reusable water bottle. Not only does this help the environment by avoiding plastic water bottles, it also is a great method for keeping your water cool for the entire trip. Invest in a S’well bottle to keep your water cold for 24 hours in style.
